This year, we did a group social 5K run as a way of celebrating our outstanding Victors from the past, Covid-fractured outdoor season. On a beautiful fall Saturday in early November, about 40 Victors ran alongside the Eramosa River, stopping every now and then to present a few awards!
• Workhorse AWARD: Tica Simmons
For consistently putting much dedication and effort into training and time trials throughout he year.
• Triple Threat Award: Tom Wood
For completing an impressive Half-Ironman this year, and for running at or near the front of all our track workouts, time trials, and road races.
• Strivin’ for Strava: Simon de Boer and Mylene Ward
For impressive high mileage in our Victors Strava group over the past year. Simon has run over 3,000 km in 2021. Mylene has run over 1,680 km so far this year.
• courage award: Emma Johnston
For consistently showing up with courage at our track workouts, and bravely coming out publicly as a trans athlete (and person) this year.
• Master Masters Award: Elizabeth Waywell and JOhn Clarke
For two national-level masters runners in our Victors ranks, Elizabeth Waywell, 63, and John Clarke, 70. Elizabeth set a couple of new Canadian records for her 60-64 age group this year: 20:22 for 5000 metres on the track and 41:08 for 10K on the roads. John still flirts with 20 minutes for 5K and 40 minutes for 10K in his new age group. An Orangeville resident, he joins us for time trials on the track, often running all three heats!
• The Comeback Kids Award: Cara Kasdorf and Dean Palmer
For a couple of longtime Victors who haven’t been around for a year or more, recovering from prolonged injuries. Cara returned to our track this summer after battling a knee injury, and Dean came back after a “litany of injuries” including a broken leg.
• Rookie-of-the-Year Award: Anna de Jong
For steady improvement and work ethic since joining our club earlier this year, and for bringing exuberance and a cheerful smile every Tuesday to the track workout.
• Run Everything Award: Mike Hammond
For running the Berlin Marathon, the virtual Boston Marathon, all of the Victors road races this year, plus showing up very consistently at our track workouts.
• Usher Posluszny Award (Trophy): Tanya Porcellato
For outstanding single race performance: Tanya recently ran the Georgina Marathon near Lake Simcoe, placing third overall and first master woman with a time of 3 hours and 13 seconds!
• vic Matthews Award (Trophy): Mary CAtherine Stewart
Vic Matthews was our founding coach in the 1970s, the club is named after him, and we present an award in his name each year for outstanding service to the Guelph Victors. This year it goes to Mary Catherine, for helping launch our new era in 2017, serving on the leadership committee since then including responsibility for membership and garments.
• spirit Award: Robert Winckler
For cheering and supporting all of the Victors at races, time trials and workouts, always there to offer encouragement and congratulations.
